3 Questions Any Good Rug Dealers Should Be Able to Answer |

Weekend rug sales at an outlet attract buyers and make dealers a lot of money. A furniture store going out of business will advertise a one time only Oriental rug sale. People come for the rug sale and end up buying closeout furniture. A rug outlet has a selection of specialty rugs. The price is prohibitive, so people buy carpeting that is less expensive.  These are all reasons to use caution when you decide to invest in a handmade, wool or silk, fine rug.

Get as much information as possible and ask the following three questions — any good rug dealers should be able to answer these:

1. What’s the country of origin?

The rug producing countries that specialize in fine, handmade rugs can make rugs of great value or rugs of poor quality. Therefore, whether the rug is made in Pakistan, India, Turkey, Iran or the USA, does not really matter. The real value of a wise rug purchase is in the quality of the material, how it was made, how old it is, and how knowledgeable is the sales staff.

At Alyshaan Rugs of Arizona, we guarantee the quality of our rugs, no matter where they were made. We specialize in fine handcrafted rugs that took time and attention to detail to make. We guarantee the quality of your purchase and will even let you try out your choice to assure that it is what you wanted. Our entire staff is well trained and can answer all of your questions regarding the authenticity and value of each fine rug.

2. What materials were used to make it?

Wool and silk are the materials of choice for getting intricate detail, vibrant color, ease of cleaning and long wearing endurance. Hand-knotted rugs are made by people who hand tie millions of knots in a room-sized rug. Rugs that are hand or machine knotted, average 60 to 100 knots per square inch. These pile rugs are priced according to the density of the material.

Flat rugs are made of warp and weft threads on a loom. The vertical threads (warp) form the foundation on the loom and the horizontal threads (weft) create the color and design. Native American rugs are hand-loomed. Other flat rugs can be from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan and Russia. They are called Dhurries, Kilims or Gilims.

Machine made rugs are less expensive, more plentiful ones found in department and home improvement stores. The materials are sometimes wool, but mostly synthetic. Unlike handmade rugs, machine made rugs are mass-produced, can fade and tear, are hard to repair and do not hold their value.

3. How old is it?

The age of a hand loomed or knotted rug increases the value of the rug. There are instances of 100-year-old rugs selling at auction for seven figures. Hand knotted rugs have the greatest value because they are easy to clean, can be repaired if damaged, develop a beautiful patina as they age and last for generations. When you spend time and money on a fine rug, you are paying for its uniqueness, the way it is made, the quality of the material and the size of the rug. Your investment will not lose its value over time.

When you search for a fine rug that fits the image of your design plan, a rug dealer who sells only fine rugs, will be your safest choice. At Alyshaan Rugs, we never have a sale. You will find our rugs priced at the value of the rug’s features.
