You may be familiar with traditional carpets & rugs, but would you recognize the transitional style if you saw it? What we refer to as “transitional” rugs are designed to evoke elements of both traditional and contemporary design, taking the best of both with a focus on comfort and functionality.
Transitional rugs can incorporate bright colors and simplistic shapes from contemporary designs as well as the more flowery, detailed work common in traditional rugs. Some carpets & rugs made in this style lean more towards traditional motifs, while others are more contemporary in tone. Whatever the mixture, transitional rugs bring the old school and the new school together to create a pleasantly disparate style.

The above transitional rug from India works in familiar designs but instead of following tradition and using it to create small detail work, the design is instead greatly enlarged to focus on the curves of the design. The warm reds and browns are what you’d expect of traditional oriental rugs, so it could be ideal for Scottsdale homes that emphasis these colors in their decor.
Here is another mixture of traditional and contemporary designs that create an entirely different look:
The style of the rug is primarily traditional, but the design elements are blown up in size and there is no border. Many transitional rugs have no border with traditional elements. Borderless rugs help keep rooms looking more open. The colors of this one are soft and luxurious.
Another example of transitional Persian rugs, the above 5×8 rug evokes a traditional layout with simplistic designs in each block. This eye-catching piece is warm and inviting — it would be perfect in an entryway or living room.

While there is a great deal of complex detail work that might make you think it’s a traditional rug, the rectangular blocks and seemingly random placement of designs are both contemporary elements. The combination of these characteristics make it a transitional piece that somewhat resembles a patchwork quilt.
There are transitional rugs that lean more toward the modern, uncomplicated sensibilities of the contemporary style. This one below is a much more simplistic design that still manages to exude elegance:
The traditional frame is present, with a colored border separating itself from the center. However, the designs from the border are large and cross over into the center of the rug. It’s “coloring outside the box,” and while many of the elements are traditional, the way the design is crafted makes it a transitional piece.
Transitional rugs can fit into almost any room of your home, as the designs aren’t limited to one particular look. If you decide to update your traditional home with a few contemporary pieces, transitional carpets & rugs can stylistically tie all those design elements together.
