Choosing Handmade Area Rugs For Entry

When choosing handmade area rugs for entry or foyer area, it is good to keep in mind that the most common sizes used in entry ways are between 4’x6’ and 6’x9’, and for Foyers are 6’x9’ or 6’ to 8’ round; of course it depends on the size of the room and the furnishings you have placed. It is common for people to ignore entryways and foyers for placing handmade rugs, which is a mistake because this is the first impression of the house and should receive special attention.  Sometimes the reason for ignoring them is the fear of placing a fine rug where it will be used extensively used, and this is the strongest point of handmade rugs is how well they hold up to heavy use.  What you may want to watch for is the material of the rug used in these areas, if they are going to be heavily used in a home with pets and children; then make sure to use an all wool rug rather than a silk or wool and silk rug.  But for normal adult use without many kids or pets, even the silks will last for decades.

Entryway is also the area where the thickness of the rug comes into play; if a door is opening over a rug, make sure the door has enough clearance. You should also be mindful of the shapes of the area / room and use a complimenting shape of the rug; but this doesn’t mean you cannot mix and match.  For example, if the entry area is square-ish, you can use a round rug or a rectangular one, but if a foyer is round shaped and also has a round table with a round looking flower arrangement on in, then a round rug will be a better fit.

Usually these areas are visible from many other areas of the house, like the living, family, and dining rooms and hallways. If you are placing big rugs in these main rooms, then do those first and allow them to dictate the rugs you place in the entry / foyer areas.
