Top 5 Antique Rugs from Around the World

In olden days, one of the cherished possessions synonymous with luxury, were beautifully created artisan fine area rugs. Prized in the orient and exotic lands like Persia, each fine rug had a unique design and history behind it.

Today we have some of the famous remnants of those times, as they grace the homes of fine art connoisseurs, national museums and private art collectors. Here we share some of the most expensive, and famous antique rugs from around the world.

1. The most famous rug is the sickle leaf vine scroll ‘Vase’ which sold for an astounding $33.7 million in a Sotheby’s New York auction in June 2013. This is the most expensive rug ever sold at an auction.

2. Next is the ‘Kirman Vase’ carpet which sold for $9.6 million at Christie’s London in April 2010. It is also a Persian rug using the herati design technique.

3. Sold in October 2013 at 7.7 million by Christie’s London, the third most famous (and pricey) rug is the ‘Star Lattice.’ It is a fine area rug of Indian origin.

4. Another beautiful work of art and one of the fourth most expensive rugs in the world, the ‘Louis XV Savonnerie’ sold in April 2000 for $5.7 million by Christie’s Monaco.

5. Sotheby’s Doha sold the ‘Pearl Carpet of Baroda’ at $5.548 million in March, 2009. The masterpiece is set with an array of precious gem stones including pearls, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.
